Just for fun.
Mine is Popular. Probably the greatest unreleased album I've ever heard. Such a crime it never got a proper release.

It's a hard one, but for me it's a toss up between What Were You Hoping For and OTJF. I appreciate how avant garde and downright weird WWYHF is, and it's got some killer songwriting, but OTJF is a more eclectic display of his talents IMO.

Van Hunt (album) holds a special place in my heart.

^^ It was a great debut, but I think he has developed and expanded as an artist and found his niche.
The debut always sounds a little tame to me now, especially when you consider how experimental and avant garde records like Popular and WWYWF are in comparison.

I think that's the case with most artists though, isn't it? How many artists come out fully formed and firing on all cylinders with their first album? Song for song though, VH is still one of his strongest albums. The ballads in particular are exquisite, songs like Precious, Who Will Love Me In Winter and What Can I Say (For Millicent) have a timeless quality to them that I can't really put into words... it's just good old fashioned quality songwriting.

I voted for Popular. It has everything. It's quirky, inventive and diverse. I hate to make predictable artist comparisons, but The Lowest 1 Of My Desires is the song every Prince fan wishes he had written in the last 20 years, I put it right up there with When Doves Cry or Sign O The Times, it's really that good. The funky guitar lick, the obscene lyrics, the insane vocal delivery, the way it changes at the end into a more rocky vibe - it's just a perfect song from beginning to end. There aren't many songs that hit you and bowl you over on a first listen, but this was one of them for me. From the second it opens with that cool drum programming and then the funky guitar I knew I was listening to something special. Oh yeah, and the rest of the albums pretty great too.

I'm all for quirky, avant garde experimentation, but What Were You Hoping For still hasn't fully grabbed me just yet. I don't know what it is, to me it feels like it's missing something. It's not a bad record, and maybe somewhere down the line it'll knock me on my ass but for right now it leaves me cold. But I LOVE Plum, Eyes Like Pearls, and The Savage Sincere L of P.

I would probably say Jungle Floor.
I still love the original debut Van Hunt, but the Popular had some pretty nice tracks.
I guess we have all grown up with his musical adventure and it depends on my mood most of the time.

I felt the same as you for a long time but after repeated listens it began to resonate with me. It's certainly not his most accessible album and I wouldn't recommend it to someone as an introduction to Van Hunt, but it's definitely a step forward artistically for Van. WWYHF is the sound of a man who is less concerned with giving the people what they want and more concerned with pushing himself to explore new ground. My favourite VH album is Popular, then probably WWYWF.
